I was off yesterday, but read an interesting report Big Brothel - a survey of the off-street sex industry in London (link goes to a 64 page pdf document) - linked to from Andrew Brown’s (a former Lewisham councillor) blog.
The report comes from a position of supporting the abolition of prostitution, a position I personally support. And it seeks to bust the the widely held notion that prostitution in brothels, massage parlors, private flats and so on is safer, somehow less seedy and that women are more in control. I think it does that.
From a research and policy perspective, it’s actually a really nice piece of work and a very well put together report. Would that all social policy research was so well constructed and easy to read (despite the harrowing subject and the selected dehumanising quotes from the “punters”).
