escaping to the islands.
after an eventful stay in athens (read part I of the trip here) we departed for the islands: our first stop the fabulous, famed santorini. there are a number of ways to travel between the greek islands, depending on your time and budget there are different speed boats which depart continuously from the port of piraeus - from slow, hulking ferries to high speed ships and ultra fast speed catamarans. we chose to fly on one of the daily flights, making it a sweet 45 minute trip as opposed to a possible 8 hour voyage by ferry.
santorini is the southernmost island of the cyclades and 240 miles to the southeast of piraeus (mainland greece.) all the individual greek islands belong to a larger group of islands, most prominent are the ionian, the cyclades, the dodecanese, and the aegean. crete, by far the largest and most diverse island, is the [...]

This is another post I wrote while in Greece. The photo is of my view at Maria’s as I wrote the post.
When we were in Hania we were talking with George at Ifigenia. He told us that 80% of Greeks smoke. We thought that seemed like a really high percentage.
After traveling around for a few weeks I’m not so skeptical of that statistic. This morning we were sitting having breakfast on an outdoor patio. There were twelve of us out here. Kathy and I were the only ones NOT smoking. It was the first time on the trip that I felt sick to my stomach - and that includes motoring around on the Aegean sea for a week!
I’ve been sitting here watching guest after guest come down the stairs. They’re ready for the day in their beachwear, with their big sunglasses carrying [...]

That day I knew I had recovered my reason because I had started crying. I had spent the night shivering of cold, some trembling in fever seeing the shadows of death all over, roaming, lurking, arising trough walls and bricks and windows. We were in a house under construction. I knew I was afraid and I thought it was good. I was born this day, I thought, this day I was left in the frozen cold of November outside because I’m not a boy. And when I awoke my brother said: “Are you not dead?” But I was not. It was the last day in Lefkosa, it was what I had been waiting for.
A letter had been written to the Greek, saying no earth belongs to the human and that great maledictions would fall on their head if they did recognize what of heavens or did correct their mistake. It [...]

I really am looking for opportunities to do some extensive traveling next year. I have a couple options in mind, but I am definitely going to need funding. So far I am leaning towards spending the month of June in the Paros Islands in Greece. It’s relatively cheap at $2,450 includes course credit and living facilities on the beach as well as excursions and access to labs etc. The flight would be around $1,000 dollars which isn’t really too bad. Then there is the whole situation about missing time at the real job. If I still have the same job, etc. etc. Anyway I certainly do feel the need to get away so if anyone has any suggestions of places abroad that are reasonably priced please do send them my way.

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis and Transport and Communication Minister Kostas Hatzidakis discussed on July 30 the basic guidelines regarding the access of two million households and businesses to “Fibre to the Home” (FTTH) technology. FTTH is a network architecture that uses optical fibres to replace all or part of the usual copper local loop used for telecommunications. Past technologies, in order of an increasingly longer fibre loop, are fibre to the neighbourhood and to the building. The project is incorporated in the framework of the “Digital Strategy 2006-2013” and will help extend already existing digital structures and broadband network. On February 5, Hatzidakis said that Greece will invest €2.5 billion in fibre-networks, while the project will be implemented through the Public and Private Partnership. (GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Work on excavating ancient Pellina in Thessaly has begun and is continuing at a rapid pace, local authorities said on July 28, in a project that ultimately aims to create an archaeological park with various educational, recreational and sports facilities around the ancient site. The immediate goal is to clean and display the ancient wall, and to calculate its course. Ancient Pellina or Pellinaion was situated on the left bank of the Peneus River in western Thessaly, between Trikki and Farkadona. The first ancient reference to the city that survives was in Pindar, who cited it as the home of the athlete Ippocles, who won a race in the Pythia Games held in 498 B.C. Ancient accounts and architectural remains yield information about the city mostly during and after the 4th century B.C.
